Re-order Point Tips The statistician who derived the ROP formula (ROP = DDLT + SS) gave as a primary condition that demand/usage be horizontal with some variation about the mean. Most firms who use ROP, use it because demand/usage is erratic or on/off. If service level must be high (stock-outs lead to premium costs), the formula ROP = Max Demand during Replenishm Lead Time can be used. In truth this formula often yields lower average inventory than subjective approaches or rules-of-thumb. If using ROP with relatively constant demand, remember that all exceptions must be communicated well in advance since planning systems only look at on-hand inventory when using ROP.
